Social innovations are new strategies, concepts, ideas and organizations that meet the social needs of different elements which can be from working conditions and education to community development and health — they extend and strengthen civil society.
What is social innovation?
“Social innovation is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress”. Social innovation can be new strategies, concept and ideas that meet the social needs of different elements which can be from working conditions and education to community development and health.
How Social Innovation is different from social entrepreneurship?
Although social entrepreneurship has become a popular rallying point for those trying to improve the world, social change can happen outside of them. As a matter of fact, solutions have historically come from the nonprofit, private, and government sectors. The concept of social innovation focuses attention on the ideas and solution that create social value- as well as the processes through which they are generated, regardless of where they are coming from.
Why do we need social innovation?
Social innovation aims to increase human well-being. It responds to societal demands that markets or existing institutions do not traditionally address. Through social innovation, different actors including civil society, entrepreneurs and policy-makers create or reconfigure social arrangements or networks, with the goal of enhancing development outcomes with respect to the economy, society and the environment. Social innovation can introduce new solutions to challenges faced by rural areas, especially those considered as marginalised.
Example for social innovations are:
1. Sink faucet nozzle
The Altered Nozzle is the worlds most extreme water saving nozzle. It installs easily into your existing tap. By atomizing water we can use 98% less water and still retain full functionality. And if you need a little more, then you switch to our regular saving mode. Still 75% savings, but all the water you need.
2. Algae water bottles
Product design student Ari Jónsson debuted these biodegradable water bottles at the Reykjavik design festival in Iceland. He created the bottles out of red algae powder and water, so they’re naturally made and even edible — if you’re into that kind of thing.Jónsson was inspired to create this bottle after finding out that more than 50% of plastic is used only once and then thrown away.
What can not be consider as social innovations:
Do you have an idea you’d like to pursue or a problem you’d like to solve but don’t know where to start or who to start with?
Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.
What do you need to bring?
Lots of energy! You’ll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.
Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you’ll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You’ll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 35,00 past events in 150+ countries around the world. More than 200,000 people across the globe are SW alumni!
Techstars Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. Beginning with Friday night pitches and continuing through brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, Startup Weekends culminate in Sunday night demos and presentations. Participants create working startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams hear talks by industry leaders and receive valuable feedback from local entrepreneurials. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education. Whether you are looking for feedback on a idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, or a team to help you execute, Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.
Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?
The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?
All Techstars Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas as determined by popular vote and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a co-founder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.
Current event is a general Techstars Startup Weekend Edition where participants are required to pitch their raw idea which could be in any vertical/theme like Technology, Education, Health, Disability, Environment, etc. and work on building a Minimum Viable Product MVP thus propelling them to take their idea to the next stage.
